CrossFit is known for cute slogans like My Warm Up is your workout. There is truth to the intensity and deliberateness of the CrossFit zeal and regime.
Also characteristic is a joshing regarding Zumba. There are many references in the Meme stratosphere regarding squats creating an uplifted rear and well Zumba such and such.
So I as a fitness instructor have been to about every training since the late 80’s. Yes I am considered to be a fitness veteran. I finally attended the Zumba One Training day.
I met Tony Witt of Amore Dance in Overland Park of Kansas City.
It was a room full of smiling cordially dressed ladies of all shapes and sizes. There was one guy. He was extroverted, happy, with leadership quality dance style.
What does that mean?
The guy emits an invitation when he dances! He smiles and dances in a way that says come dance also! “You can share being happy along with me!”
When I watch CrossFit competitors, the good ones. I also feel compelled to lift and grow strong. I had an early introduction to the weight room and am comfortable with the earlier mostly male gym scene.
Many people see CrossFit and have a reverse response. They interpret what they view as scary, crazy, intimidating if impossible for them. So it’s not an invitation but a repulsion.
In contrast, CrossFit enthusiasts see Zumba and maybe they giggle or scoff.
The range of motion is limited ( no squatting or rolling). The load bearing is absent. And so on. The muscle development is not evident.
This article is my attempt to explain what Zumba does extremely well.
Zumba encapsulates the physical body language of invitation. The workshop emphasizes mirroring over verbal cues.
It also mandates the practice of causing participants to expect joyful liberating release! If Freud had been known for making people feel healed his reputation might have spread beyond academia and therapy.
Granted Beto, one of three Zumba CEO’s, connected with good advisers for building a capitalistic empire. He also recognized in humans exactly what we love about our pets!!
We love endless wiggly furry happiness that is instantly embraceable and practically available on demand. People as a rule are guarded, piled with stress or worries, divided into camps or cliques and not exactly huggable and cuddly most of the day.
The Zumba One training was a day in not just structuring an hour of exercise for paying clients. It was a foundational structure in how to create an oasis for the weary.
Latin rhythms create a party atmosphere. Beats and tempos throughout the music speak to your feet and your hips as well as your heart.
The lesson is to be correct but simple so as not to confuse newcomers or to clutter the minds of your regulars.
Speak with your entire body not just your words. Make certain to tease playfully to elicit pleasure at just being present! It’s sharing and caring and fun in a group.
The side benefit would be that vigorous movement also is healthy and can effect energy and body composition. There has always been a wide gap between competitive weights and the world of music and dance.
I spent 5 years immersed in the CrossFit scene. I was very disappointed when the Tabata songs were finally available to everyone.
The concept of intense training set to proper cadence and driving sounds of compelling voices with signals embedded to start and stop on a stopwatch has SO much potential!!
I really hope real artists take on this task of bringing the magic of sound to the CrossFit community. They certainly have a wide array of clothing and snacks thus far.
In conclusion, CrossFit can take a note from Zumba and strive to max out sound and rhythm with a texture of celebration!
Hopefully CrossFit can see they have a dimension yet to encompass for Tabata this and a Fight Gone Bad.
Tabata is 8 rounds of 20 seconds moving and ten seconds rest. Fight Gone Bad is 5 activity stations where you have a minute at each. These are great workouts that can be even better with orchestrated soundtracks to organize and drive the energy of participants.
This ends as an invitation to musicians that CrossFit. Create something unique why don’t you?
I hope this article allows outsiders to observe the seed of respect for What Zumba delivers consistently.
And like good medicine- everyone can benefit from adding it to their routine once in a while.
Be the BEST YOU EVER!
