If we’re to be honest, rarely anything looks as good as tanned skin does, especially when you’ve got great legs that you like to show off! Unfortunately, like it usually happens with all good things in life, this one too; sun exposure isn’t the healthiest option for us. Yes, bronze tan is fantastic but too much sun exposure may not only do a lot of damage to your skin, but it can potentially jeopardize your health in the long run.
NOTE: Sun protection isn’t one of those common myths you keep hearing. It’s a real thing, and you need to pay attention.
Today, we’re discussing a few of the reasons why you should get away from the sun and providing some tips to help you do just that.
#1 Skin Cancer
Sorry that we’re starting the list with the worst case scenario but, that’s where we need to start for you to understand how potentially dangerous your excessive exposure to the sun is.
Not everyone who likes sunbathing gets skin cancer. You can protect yourself by taking good care of your skin, use sunscreen whenever you leave the house (yes, even when the days are cold) and limit your time in the sun and its UV exposure. Stay away from the sun between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM (this is when the sun is most intense.) Skin cancer is officially the most common of all human cancers.
There are three major types of skin cancers:
- BCC, or Basal cell carcinoma
- SCC, or Squamous cell carcinoma
While the first two are grouped as non-melanoma skin cancers, melanoma is extremely dangerous and often deadly.
Too much sun exposure causes solar lentigines or sunspots, and they usually show up on the parts of the skin that have been “hit” by the soon the most. They are flat, and brown and often not too aesthetically pleasing. Sunspots can rarely go away; in fact, once you get one, it only gets darker over time as you continue to expose yourself to the sun.
#3 Damaging Skin Cells
The first anti-aging secret out there is – protect your skin against the harmful UV rays that not only damage but also kill the skin cells! The top player of your skin is sensitive, and even a mild sunburn can destroy it and compromise your healthy living.
Because the skin is your body’s first layer of defense, protect it the best way you can. Start with the basics like choosing the dark side of the street, wearing hats and long sleeve clothes, and using sunscreen daily to switching to organic skin care and paying regular visits to your dermatologist for routine checkups.
#4 Prevent Eye Damage
The eyes are susceptible to the sun, as is the skin around the eye. If the eyes are not protected adequately, their excessive exposure to the sun can cause temporary blindness or pain. Fortunately, sunglasses are not just a fashion thing, but a protection asset, also.
The sun is a powerful thing, and unless you take things seriously, you may end up with sunburns, unsightly brown spots and, in the worst case scenario – skin cancer. Be smart about your sun protection, and you’ll be fine.
